If you’re lucky, the area around the gate has been planned to accommodate the needs of a mechanical system that needs to operate 365 days a year in all four seasons. If you’re in an area that doesn’t get much snow this is less of a problem. As long as you have enough space under the gate throughout its entire travel, you can get away with a couple of inches clearance. If you’re installing gates where there is snow accumulation, the odd ice storm, compacted slush, leaves and frozen debris - you should consider leaving more room under the gate!

It is most important to consider GRADE AS KEY when you are planning a gate system that involves a below-grade component such as an automatic bollard or an in-ground swing gate operator. These systems have below grade mechanical components and need to be the highest part of the driveway surface in order to minimize how much water and detritus gets in. They must have a very good drainage system in order to efficiently get water out. It’s not complicated - just typically underestimated. Graft designers can help suggest ways to maximize the chances of success with these systems.
